The Prenscia User Group Meeting (UGM) provides a unique opportunity to learn about the latest solutions available in nCode and ReliaSoft from both technical staff as well as real-world application success from existing customers.

This two-day, user-centric event brings together both nCode and ReliaSoft customers to experience software first-hand through interactive workshops, to learn about the latest capabilities through technical presentations, and to understand how other engineers have implemented these leading tools to address durability and reliability challenges.

Agenda

In addition to a variety of nCode and ReliaSoft use case presentations, the Prenscia User Group Meeting will include a number of collaborative workshop experiences. Attendees will work together in small groups to overcome a provided challenge and will leave with real-world solutions to common engineering problems. Please note that user presentations are subject to change.

Using the Hilbert Transform for Tire Phasing Calculations

1st order wheel tire vibration, a perennial nuisance in heavy trucks, is highly dependent on the relative phasing between all six wheel ends. The Hilbert Transform was implemented using the Python scripting glyph in nCode Glyphworks to extract phasing data from accelerometer measurements. The Hilbert Transform is far better suited to non-stationary signals than the Fourier Transform which makes it ideal for processing data from on-road vehicle testing. The nCode Python Scripting Glyph was used to implement the Hilbert Transform in order to streamline and standardize the processing of hundreds of data acquisitions. The tire phasing data is used to characterize the vehicle’s state over the course of an on-road test and also to correlate models.

In this workshop, you’ll use measured time series data – strain, speed, GPS, video, etc. – to identify the factors that contribute to a durability failure. Application of Whole Life Weld Analysis to a Solid Rear Axle

It has become established practice in the North American automotive industry to predict weld life using a structural stress methodology. This method is based on the fatigue behavior of typical welds and does not reflect possible improvement in weld geometry, parent metal or welding procedure. This methodology is recognized as a conservative design approach. A Unified Theory of Fatigue has been developed by Professor G. Glinka of the University of Waterloo, Canada. This theory is being validated by the SAE FD&E committee and has been implemented in the Whole Life Weld CAE Analysis glyph in Design Life. Results have been presented at the 2018 and 2019 User Group Meetings by A. Halfpenny. MANA is developing a solid rear axle for a new vehicle. The weld joints have been analyzed with Seam Weld which has indicated several locations with infant mortality. Experience has shown that these failures were unlikely. The Whole Life approach has been applied to these locations to better understand the capability of these joints. Results show that some areas are unlikely to fail and that other critical areas have been incorrectly identified. Whole Life analysis has significant potential to eliminate “false positives” which require significant engineering resources to address. This will result in reduced cost and mass while speeding design development.
